Recently, Sony has announced that they will stop selling physical media as a whole on all future consoles. This comes after they recently removed 500 movies from people's PSN accounts. The Switch 2 doesn't allow you to own any of the games you want to play, the game you purchase at the store is strictly a license that downloads the game. The Xbox One onward requires a Microsoft Account to even set the console up to play any games. These are just a few things that bug me profusely and I refuse to put up with at all.
I am more of a PC gamer overall, I mostly play my windows and native games on Linux. I haven't installed steam on this install of OpenSUSE since I installed it back in May of 2025. I buy all my games on GOG or, if theres a DRM free copy available, on Humblebundle or itch.io. I occasionally would purchase a game on steam and use steam before, but I've decided if there is any form of online requirement besides downloading and storing the game, then I don't want anything to do with it.
I recently purchased a PS4 console. The reason I did this is because I did some research and discovered you can purchase games for PS4 and as long as there is no online requirement listed on the back of the game you have a copy you can store and use forever, the form of DRM that the PS4 uses requires just the disc and that is it. This is the ONLY form of DRM I find acceptable, not agreeable, but acceptable. I also have an Xbox 360 for this same exact reason.
My point here is basically I don't care if I have to stop playing new video games overall. I don't think that will happen, because GOG is still going strong and constantly has great games being added to it, and all of my favorite games of all time happen to be DRM free.I also emulate proudly. These companies are trying to create a situation where you don't own the media that you purchase. I am sick and tired of this constantly happening so I am putting down my foot and refusing outright to even play a DRM (non-console disc based) video game ever again. I urge anybody reading this to do the same if you care about the media you buy not being taken from you at random, or being locked behind a payscheme, or being only available if you are around internet.
